Scott Van Loo

Equity Coach

I was born in San Diego and raised in Northern Colorado. I am second generation Lebanese on my mother's side and from Dutch and Irish heritage on my father's side and my ethnicities not only inform my identity but also my lens as a facilitator. I first got involved with equity work in college and more deeply at the beginning of my career in education. I am passionate about working in and creating transformational spaces that not only advance equity work, but fundamentally change people, systems, and practices.

What does an equitable world look like to you?

An equitable world is one in which we no longer need equity trainings. One where we, as complex individuals, institutions and systems can both recognize the harm and inequities that we have created and actively work to exist beyond the limitations of what currently exists. This requires an incredible commitment to heal while simultaneously recognizing our common humanity.

What do participants take away from the Equity Labs?

Participants take away an awareness and understanding of the places within an organization of where the equity work needs to take place and to create a commitment to do so.

Who is someone you admire and why?

One person I deeply admire is Dr. Vivian Elliott. She has been a mentor in my own journey in equity work. She recognized potential in me where I could not see and led me to deeper understandings where I would not go. For 20 years, she has been a colleague, mentor, teacher and beloved friend.

If you could travel anywhere right now, where would you go?

1. the beach 2. the beach 3. the beach
